Pop and Tampons

Girl: "You really like soda, don't you Miss M?"
Me: "Yes, I guess I do."
Boy: "No, you like DIET soda, probably because you don't want to get fat....that would be really bad for you...."
At least he didn't say I was drinking it because I'm already fat!

And, in the cafeteria....
Girl: "Miss M, we found this in the bathroom..." (holds up a tampon)
Me: "Where did you get that?"
Girl: "'Suzy' (pseudonym) and I were wondering what came out of the machine in the bathroom, so we put in a quarter and this came out. We don't know what it is."
Me: "Do either of you....need it?"
Girl: "No....do you?"
Me: "No! But....I'll take it from you!"
Girl: "Okay..."
I promptly threw it away before any 4th graders could ask me what I was holding!

Moms

I thought of a cute on that I forgot to post a while back:

2nd grade girl: "I have a question for you."
Me: "Yes?"
Girl: "Are you a mom, or do you have a mom?"
Me: "No, I'm not a mom, I just have a mom."
Girl: "Oh! So you're just a kid!"
Me: "Uhh....yes, just a big kid I guess."
Girl: "So, you're just like us!"
Me: "I guess you could put it that way."

Some good ones....

Girl: "I wonder why when you came over here, everyone started doing what they were supposed to do?"
Me: "I dunno, I wonder why that is....?"
Girl: "I think it's because you're magical. And beautiful."
Boy: "Yeah, you are really beautiful!"

Boy: "How come you know how to read Spanish?"
Me: "I've told you before guys, I'm Mexican, that's why!"
Boy #2: "Nuh uh, you're only kind of Mexican!"

Girl: "Do you talk to a lot of boys?"
Me: "You mean students?"
Girl: "No, I mean boys."
Me: "Boys my age?"
Girl: "Yeah!"
Me: "Well kind of, sort of, I guess?"
Girl: "Well then why don't you just pick one and marry him!"

Me: "Someone is wearing really nice cologne."
Boy: "It's me! Come here! Smell me!"
(I smell) Me: "Ah, it is you...it's CK1, isn't it?"
Boy: "Yeah, how did you know?"
Me: "My old boyfriend wears it."
Class: "Aww!"
Girl: "Wait, why is he your 'old boyfriend?'"
Me: "Well, we aren't dating anymore, we're just friends."
Class: "Ohhhhh (sadly)"
2nd Girl: "Why did you break up?"
Me: "I don't know...."
3rd Girl: "You must have been too pretty for him!"

They Just Melt My Heart

My sickness continued to get worse as the week went on, resulting in my losing my voice completely by Wednesday night. Here are some of the cute comments that came from the kids -- they were so concerned for me!!

"Where did your voice go?"

"When is your voice coming back?"

"Is your voice gone forever!?"

"We're going to have to listen really well today, because we can barely hear you!"

"I am sad for you and your pretty voice. When I get home, I will ask my mom to make you soup, that will make you all better."

"Why are you drinking soda? You should be drinking water, drinking soda is probably why you lost your voice...."

"Have you tried clearing your throat?"

And finally, they gave me silly bandz and lots of hugs :) The hugs were exactly what I needed!

Mario

Since I was pretty sick today, we watched a plethora of educational music videos, one of which was "Blast." Upon hearing "Bolero," a little guy said:
"Hey! That's the music they use in Super Mario Brothers!"
I didn't have the heart to tell him that Ravel, in fact, did not write music for Nintendo games... :)

First Illness of the School Year

It's official. I have a sinus infection. I love, LOVE, my students, but all of those amazing hugs and holding of hands means they gave me their germs!! I started antibiotics today, and I think I'm going to brave going to school tomorrow. I may have to change my lesson plan to showing a video so that I don't have to sing....we shall see....

I'm sure this is the first of many sicknesses to come (me and my stupid diabetic immune system!) But man, it is worth it to see their smiling faces every morning and see their eyes light up as they greet me :)

Crying Children

I have a cryer. She is adorable, but man oh man, can she wail. Technically she isn't "mine," but she's taken quite a liking to me. She's a kidnergartener, and thankfully, she doesn't cry in music, but every day at lunch, she bawls. I mean, total waterworks. She misses her mom. And I always manage to find her amidst sobs, hiccups, and a wet face. Well...we're best buds now. She always likes my hugs. And I'm starting to make her laugh! She doesn't understand that I cannot go to recess with her because I have to help in the cafeteria. This normally turns on the eyeball faucet again when she realizes she must go out alone. I've tried to tell her that I miss my mom too, but I think about how awesome my mom is, and it makes me smile, and that she should try the same thing. I'm hoping this tactic will work tomorrow.

I speak fluent child as of late. I see kids at the store, or out and about, and I am instantly drawn to start up a conversation with them. All of these cute kids (and sometimes even the ones that make me want to pull out my fair) have me thinking about babies. My students think I am plenty old enough to have kids and that I should have babies. I told them that as soon as I find a good man, I'll get right on that :)
